Current Practice
My often uncomfortably personal work explores notions of obsession, photographic representation and personal boundaries. This is largely manifest in the use of photography and images to tell a story. I have been drawn to the inherent tensions that exist within personal relationships including notions of family, the monotony of the everyday and the shaping of identities within that context.
I often work with themes that are tied to the notion of the outsider, whether it is placing myself in this role through the distance that I create between myself and my subject through a narrative, or examining masculinity and specific instances of masculine identity based on an underlying tension of sexual desire. In so doing I engage with the potential for energy that exists in an "us" and "them" or "you" and "me" dynamic. My work deals with obsession and manipulating that obsession as I create a photographic series. By putting pressure on this distance, and self-consciously observing in an analytical yet furious spirit, I strive to introduce an element of violence in my observation as I obsessively work to permeate these objects to their core. This work process has also led me to begin to incorporate other mediums in my practice like installation and video as a way to compliment the photographic narrative.
